Summary

Ghost World is the story of Enid and Rebecca, teenage friends facing the unwelcome prospect of adulthood, and the uncertain future of their complicated relationship。 Clowes conjures a balanced semblance, both tender and objective, of their fragile existence, capturing the mundane thrills and hourly tragedies of a waning adolescence, as he follows a tenuous narrative thread through the fragmented lives of these two fully realised young women。

This book follows two teenager friends, Enid and Becky, that follows pretty typical high school things like how their friendship falters as they grow up together。 I think this book had been built up so highly, that it was bound to fall short of the praise it received。 One thing that feels off is the writing a bit。 It's not that Clowes can't write girls well, but the sarcastic personality of the characters feels universal, in a way。 It doesn't feel super unique to either girl。 I think it's more t This book follows two teenager friends, Enid and Becky, that follows pretty typical high school things like how their friendship falters as they grow up together。 I think this book had been built up so highly, that it was bound to fall short of the praise it received。 One thing that feels off is the writing a bit。 It's not that Clowes can't write girls well, but the sarcastic personality of the characters feels universal, in a way。 It doesn't feel super unique to either girl。 I think it's more the result of that than a "men can't write women" thing, but that certainly comes to mind too。 Since it is somewhat based on Clowes' life, it does feel authentic in a way。 Just more edgy for the sake of edgy。 Maybe I've just grown away from that style of writing。 So, it could be on me too。 In terms of the classroom, it might be too much for the high school I teach at。 I don't need parent emails about this book! 。。。more

So I think if I was younger, early high school I would have liked this。 Unfortunately I found them being so negative and shitting on everyone so forced。 Some of the charm reminds me of Daria, but even then Daria shows growth, she has people different from her talking her through things。 The person I got this recommended from I can completely see why they enjoy this but I found it suffocating。 When you're 30, shitting on people and not just letting people like what they like, live how they want t So I think if I was younger, early high school I would have liked this。 Unfortunately I found them being so negative and shitting on everyone so forced。 Some of the charm reminds me of Daria, but even then Daria shows growth, she has people different from her talking her through things。 The person I got this recommended from I can completely see why they enjoy this but I found it suffocating。 When you're 30, shitting on people and not just letting people like what they like, live how they want to live without constant comment, is just a waste of energy。 I've never enjoyed people like this, I feel they think they are special rare stars in the sky but that means they have to stand out from everyone。 Being someone known for being unique in high school with no effort, just being the weird kid who sometimes also liked really popular "normie" things, I attracted people like this and they were the worst friends。 if your way of life is all about "wow everyone sucks" maybe give it a read。 。。。more

Loved this book as a teen in the nineties。 Rereading 20 years later it just makes me sad- a poignant reminder of the misery and angst of growing up。 Surely a masterpiece of its time but likely more dated now than timeless。

on my gosh! this was great ✨ it felt like being back in high school , watching 90s chick-flicks with my high school girlfriends (ghost world included), being a tiny bit (or a lot) lost ourselves。 I luv。

Hilarious and relatable。 It's difficult to find stories that aren't about people who are perfect and whose lives are also perfect。 Ghost World sheds light on the clunky and boring parts of life that are so ordinary but that's what makes it a great graphic novel。 It feels real because the characters could totally be real people, even if some characters seem outrageous。 I love it!

I loved this movie 20 years ago - a totally different thing。 I wonder what I would have thought of this book then?

hmmm。 i have vague memories of enjoying the film version of this when i was younger, but the comic was a disappointment。for the first several chapters, this is a comic about a pair of snarky, negative, cynical teenagers talking shit about everyone around them。 literally everyone。 and maybe it's just me, but that type of jaded negativity stopped entertaining me when i stopped being a jaded teenager。 i get the teenage boredom thing, and their friendship feels realistic。 but the negativity just bec hmmm。 i have vague memories of enjoying the film version of this when i was younger, but the comic was a disappointment。for the first several chapters, this is a comic about a pair of snarky, negative, cynical teenagers talking shit about everyone around them。 literally everyone。 and maybe it's just me, but that type of jaded negativity stopped entertaining me when i stopped being a jaded teenager。 i get the teenage boredom thing, and their friendship feels realistic。 but the negativity just becomes unbearable。only in the final two chapters does the story shift into something bittersweet。 in the end, it's about growing up, and the loss of things we took for granted in youth。 that melancholic moving on, and watching as life carries on。 i liked these relatively emotional chapters, but it was a slog to get there。 daria and jane vibes, but without the charm。side note: what was with the weird self-referential part, where the girls talk about a cute cartoonist named daniel clowes? was that supposed to be funny? it struck me as self-indulgent and vaguely creepy。 。。。more

I hated the first half of this。 I guess I didn't find it necessary to take jabs at certain cultures and differences in people even though the author was trying to demonstrate teen angst, immaturity, and identity confusion。There were a lot of missed opportunities here, and I find it a bit baffling that "Ghost World" is as famous as it is。 The language is dated and some of the mean things Enid says are exceptionally cringe worthy。 The author could have written this differently while still incorpor I hated the first half of this。 I guess I didn't find it necessary to take jabs at certain cultures and differences in people even though the author was trying to demonstrate teen angst, immaturity, and identity confusion。There were a lot of missed opportunities here, and I find it a bit baffling that "Ghost World" is as famous as it is。 The language is dated and some of the mean things Enid says are exceptionally cringe worthy。 The author could have written this differently while still incorporating elements of negativity and self hatred。I can't see this one aging well。 。。。more

。。。more

It felt like a story written by a man who has always heard how mean teenage girls are。 The author took that sentiment and ran with it。 As someone who was once a teenage girl, I have never encountered someone as hateful as Enid。 It felt unbelievable how mean and callous she was。 I know that is often where characters start in a Bildungsroman, but good grief。

While I wanted to like this comic about two teenage friends on the brink of adulthood, I grew tired of their negative attitudes toward and about seemingly everyone and everything they come into contact with, the loose sense of plot。

Daniel Clowes' 82-pages coming-of-age tale of two lifelong friends, Rebecca and Enid, who on the doorstep of adulthood slowly and inevitably start drifting apart。A tale full of existential angst, sexual dreams and repression, wishes, secrets and inconsequential daily grievances of teenagers。 Brilliantly depicted and notwithstanding its brevity, Clowes perfectly captures the dynamic of their relationship。 Daniel Clowes' 82-pages coming-of-age tale of two lifelong friends, Rebecca and Enid, who on the doorstep of adulthood slowly and inevitably start drifting apart。A tale full of existential angst, sexual dreams and repression, wishes, secrets and inconsequential daily grievances of teenagers。 Brilliantly depicted and notwithstanding its brevity, Clowes perfectly captures the dynamic of their relationship。 。。。more

Classic graphic novel that perfectly captures teenagers who loath & judge everything and everyone around them, including a typical cast of freeks and geeks, which simultaneously depicts Enid & Rebecca as both cool anti-heroes and laughably naïve kids with a lot to learn, including their own fates。 This must be the only book I've ever read that took less time than watching the movie。 Classic graphic novel that perfectly captures teenagers who loath & judge everything and everyone around them, including a typical cast of freeks and geeks, which simultaneously depicts Enid & Rebecca as both cool anti-heroes and laughably naïve kids with a lot to learn, including their own fates。 This must be the only book I've ever read that took less time than watching the movie。 。。。more
